For the next couple of weeks, I’m going to take an easy, laid-back trip through Time and Space during with some quick peeks at one or two costume props for each of The Doctor’s incarnations from Doctor Who.
The Twelfth Doctor: At A Glance
The Twelfth Doctor is portrayed by Peter Capaldi, a self-proclaimed Whovian, who still currently holds the title of The Doctor. He started out as darker, edgier Doctor questioning his own goodness, but maintained a quick wit, humor and capacity for kind acts that help drive character.
In just the first series, The Twelfth Doctor’s adventures have taken him to meet a robot Robin Hood, travel upon the Orient Express, go inside a Dalek, and experience a rapidly shrinking TARDIS.
So far, The Doctor’s primary companion remains Clara Oswald, now a teacher a school called Coal Hill, and is dating fellow teacher Danny Pink, of whom The Doctor is none too fond. Other recurring companions include The Paternoster Gang comprised of Silurian sleuth Madame Vastra, human Jenny and Sontaran Strax. He also had run-in with fellow Time Lord, Santa Claus, portrayed by Nick Frost, during the Christmas Special.
The series ended with all sorts of upheaval, including Clara leaving him, and the revealing of his ongoing pursuer, Missy, as actually being the The Mistress, the rebirth of archenemy, The Master.
Being a “more mature” body, this Doctor’s look is sleek and streamlined with a retro black frock coat, fitted black trousers, taylored collared shirts, a dark colored or grey waistcoat (vest), and black Dr. Martens style shoes.
This Doctor’s biggest enemy, seemed to be himself, and he asked Clara as early as the second episode, if he was “a good man.” Unable to answer, Clara eventually proclaimed whether or not he was one, he was trying to be. This internal battle continued to be waged throughout the season.
He might not still know if he’s a good man or not, but Capaldi has so far turned out to be a very good Doctor. Plus he has a wonderful accent!
“I’m Scottish,” he said in his opening episode Deep Breath, “I can really complain about things now.”
The Props: Those Beautiful Coats
According some fan sites, Capaldi has said he wanted his look to be an easy one for fans to cosplay, so they wouldn’t have to have too much trouble trying to make an outfit. Spoken like a true Whovian.
When Capaldi first revealed the look of The Doctor, that beautiful crimson-lined coat was all the talk. This piece was already commercially available, as it is a classic Crombie Coat, and very, very expensive. The slim, black retro coat runs for £895 (about $1,400). Ouch! Film Jackets does have a more affordable version for $159, and the official Doctor Who Shop has one for even cheaper, at $99.98. This official coat runs on Amazon for the same price. Yes, there is a Twelfth Doctor costume t-shirt out as well, for around $25 or less from the Doctor Who Shop and other retailers.
Those already excited bout the next series will notice more publicity images of The Doctor’s maroon velvet coat. Wilson Jacket has a version available for $169.
The Doctor’s coat remained a constant, but he did undergo some changes every now and then, including turning from the vest and tailored collared shirt to a layered t-shirt designs, with a dark hoodie under it.
I actually “called” this coat and te-shirt look before The Doctor’s look was revealed when my children and I had a “what will the new Doctor wear” gingerbread cookie design contest in 2013. You can see our silly results in my GeekMom post. We also revealed Santa as a Time Lord then, too, so we were really on fire with our predictions.
Bonus Craft: Make The Doctor’s Hipster Shirts
The Twelfth Doctor is a pretty classy looking guy, but he can be a little trendy as well. He’s even gotten a little punky with his look, wearing a black (although navy blue will work) hoodie and distressed jumper and t-shirts under his coat.
This is an easy piece to make, as it is just about layering. Using a plain black long-sleeved t-shirt or crew-neck jumper, cut series or small slits in the front, so there are several small holes. Next, cut the ridge of the front of the collar off, like the images shown below:
If you’re planning on wearing the hoodie and and/or coat in warmer weather, it might be more comfortable to use a short-sleeved black t-shirt instead. There are also hints at his wearing a pink Hurley style t-shirt under a white, patterned t-shirt as well, along with the hoodie and coat, of course.
Even though we’ve spent the last 13 weeks traveling with The Doctors, it looks like here is still going to be quite a bit of adventure ahead for him. We know one thing, regardless of his look, he’ll always have plenty to say..and brag about:
“Could you not just let me enjoy this moment of not knowing something,” he said. “It happens so rarely.”
